Vassilis Philippou
Sunday 31st January 21:15 EET / Fengaros Reacts
Cypriot composer Vassilis Philippou is releasing his debut album ‘Sol Aurorae’ (“dawn sun”) in January 2021. For Philippou, the dawn’s sun is a continuous reminder of vitality and inquiry; it is contact and communication with our fundamental emotions. Philippou’s songs are rooted in Cypriot culture, its sounds, and discourse, and are influenced by eastern Mediterranean musical traditions. The Cypriot dialect is central to these tracks, giving both meaning to the sound and shape to its expression.
Sol Aurorae’s contemporary modal music centers on ancient scales and rhythms concentrated in the greater Middle East, its musical traditions of which are the result of interaction between various cultures that met and lived together artistically. With Philippou on voice, ney and percussion, joining him is an ensemble formed by violinist and violist, Michalis Koulimis, including Giannis Koutis on oud and guitar, and Marios Menelaou on double bass.
