Exploring musical variations through group composition and improvisation
The workshop will explore ways of improvisation and composition, with small melodic and rhythmic patterns as its starting point. Using simple phrases that act as musical nuclei, the participants will slowly build longer phrases. Within the group, the idea of one will feed the improvisation of the other in order to unlock the mystery of improvisation!
This workshop is open to musicians of all instruments and vocalists.
About Panagiotis Andreou
Greek-born, Grammy winner and Grammy nominated bass player Panagiotis Andreou belongs to a dynamic group of New York-based creative musicians redefining the contemporary music scene. A sonic alchemist, Mr. Andreou masterfully blends electronic jazz, Latin and Balkan music with his unique style of playing and singing, drawing from a wide range of influences spanning funk, timba, Konnakol (Indian Scat) to Balkan and Greek folkloric music. He is a founding member of the sensational New York Gypsy All-stars, a band that performs regularly at Drom in New York City, tours extensively internationally and has appeared in world renowned jazz, classical and Gypsy festivals and venues (Musikverein, St Pölten Festspielhaus, NY Gypsy Festival, Pierre Boulez Saal).
Panagiotis also performs, tours and records with the pioneering electric groove trio, Now vs Now, featuring drum sensation Mark Guiliana and keys wizard Jason Lindner (2014 JAA electronic keyboardist of year). Their 2009 debut release, Now vs Now, described by NPR radio presenter Josh Jackson as “the sound of New York city…the sound of now,” was produced by Meshell Ndegeocello and mixed by Bob Power (Roots, Eryka Badu). Their second album, Earth Analog, firmly established the band as pioneers in the electric music scene, and the New York Times praised them as an “outfit singularly devoted to delivering an immersive mind-body experience through heavy groove.”
On the Latino front, Panagiotis has played and recorded with the Grammy-nominated band Gonzalo Grau y La Clave Secreta. In 2010, he was awarded “Latin Bass Player of the Year” by the Latin Jazz Corner blog, and the recent JAA award-winning percussionist Pedro Martinez, with whom he has played often, has described him as “marking a new era in the history of latino bass playing. “ Panagiotis exudes boundless energy on stage, where he mesmerizes with vocalized bass solos, funky timba-inflected lines and an uncanny ability to create musical bridges across genres. A musicians’ musician, Panagiotis is without a doubt a consummate artist, the epitome of versatility, and a world-class virtuoso bass player.
