Takendim...Rhythms and Polyrhythms
“Rhythm is without a doubt a big part of our lives. From the moment of creation, our heart beats and we are synchronised with something rhythmical that accompanies us until the ‘end’.”
In this workshop we will study rhythm using the polyrhythmic approach, meaning, the existence of two or more rhythms at the same time. In these lessons we will be taught ways to approach rhythm, through the techniques of Carnatic music (South Indian classical music) and how to apply and create polyrhythms verbally, otherwise described as the method Konnakol. At the same time, we will learn how to develop these polyrhythms, but also how to understand and perform complex rhythmic structures. The workshop, therefore, introduces to its participants new rhythmic approaches, suggesting methods for the improvement of the sense of ‘pulse’ and development of rhythmical perception. During the workshop we will transfer the new material to our musical instruments and we will create new compositions, which will include the rhythmic topics covered, along with other aspects of Carnatic music (Modes - Raga, rhythmic circles - Tala, form and more). Our composition will be presented at a concert at Fengaros Music Village 2019.
This workshop invites musicians of all levels and instruments to participate, as well as dancers.

Τακεντίμ... Ρυθμοί και πολυρυθμίες
“Ο ρυθμός είναι αναμφίβολα ένα μεγάλο μέρος της ζωής μας. Από τη στιγμή της δημιουργίας, η καρδιά μας χτυπά και είμαστε συντονισμένοι με κάτι ρυθμικό που μας συνοδεύει μέχρι το ‘τέλος’.”
Στο εργαστήρι αυτό θα μελετηθεί ο ρυθμός με μια διαφορετική προσέγγιση, αυτή της πολυρυθμίας, δηλαδή της συνύπαρξης δύο ή περισσότερων ρυθμών σε μια χρονική στιγμή. Στα μαθήματα θα διδαχθούμε τρόπους προσέγγισης του ρυθμού, μέσα από τις τεχνικές της Καρνατικής μουσικής (κλασική μουσική της νότιας Ινδίας) και πώς να εκτελούμε και να δημιουργούμε πολυρυθμίες λεκτικά ή αλλιώς με τη μέθοδο Konnakol. Παράλληλα θα μάθουμε πώς μπορούμε να αναπτύσσουμε τις πολυρυθμίες αλλά και πώς να κατανοούμε και να εκτελούμε πολύπλοκες ρυθμικές διατάξεις. Το εργαστήρι, λοιπόν, εισάγει τους συμμετέχοντες σε νέες ρυθμικές προσεγγίσεις, προτείνοντας μεθόδους για τη βελτίωση της αίσθησης του παλμού και ανάπτυξης της ρυθμικής αντίληψης. Κατά τη διάρκεια του εργαστηρίου, θα μεταφέρουμε το νέο υλικό στα μουσικά όργανα και θα δημιουργήσουμε μια σύνθεση, η οποία θα περιέχει τα ρυθμικά ζητήματα που καλύψαμε, μαζί με άλλα στοιχεία της Καρνατικής μουσικής (κλίμακες - Raga, μέτρο - Tala, φόρμα, κ.α.). Η σύνθεσή μας θα παρουσιαστεί σε συναυλία στο Fengaros Music Village 2019.
Στο εργαστήρι μπορούν να λάβουν μέρος μουσικοί όλων των επιπέδων και οργάνων, αλλά και χορευτές.
Bio:
Originally from Nicosia, Skordis is one of Cyprus’s most acclaimed contemporary composers of the 21st century having won awards from the Netherlands, South Korea, Cyprus, Iceland, Mexico and the USA. After his studies in composition at university at Berklee College of Music and the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam, as well as Karnatic music and Balinese Gamelan at ISI Denpasar in Bali, Skordis has since written over fifty compositions, comprising mostly of operas, orchestral and chamber music, oratorios, gamelan pieces and music for theatre, dance and short films. The composer finds inspiration in the primordial human nature and more recently, from ceremonial and mystical ritual from the world and his own experiences.
