Pre-War Rebetiko: Theory and practice workshop
In the wider musical realm of Greek folk and traditional music, terms like ‘makam’ and ‘dromos’ (folk scales) are used as communication vehicles, with the ultimate goal to develop the performing skill, as well as the skill of improvisation - the ‘taximi’. Ιn this workshop, the students will become acquainted with the general presentation of these codes, their relationship and their connection to the musical act of the urban folk song, known as pre-war Rebetiko.
The workshop is addressed to musicians who are playing folk and traditional instruments, but also to people who are interested in eastern musical traditions.

Προπολεμικό ρεμπέτικο: Εργαστήρι θεωρίας και πράξης
Στη μουσική πράξη αυτού που ευρέως ονομάζουμε λαϊκή και παραδοσιακή μουσική, όροι όπως τα μακάμ και οι λαϊκοί δρόμοι χρησιμοποιούνται ως κώδικες επικοινωνίας με απώτερο σκοπό την ανάπτυξη της ερμηνευτικής ικανότητας, αλλά και της ικανότητας αυτοσχεδιασμού - ταξίμι. Στο εργαστήρι αυτό οι σπουδαστές θα καταπιαστούν με τη γενική παρουσίαση των κωδικών αυτών, τη σχέση τους και τη σύνδεσή τους με τη μουσική πράξη του προπολεμικού αστικού λαϊκού τραγουδιού, γνωστού ως προπολεμικό ρεμπέτικο.
Το εργαστήρι απευθύνεται σε μουσικούς που ασχολούνται με λαϊκά και παραδοσιακά όργανα, αλλά και σε όσους έχουν ένα γενικότερο ενδιαφέρον για τις ανατολικές μουσικές παραδόσεις.
Bio:
Voulgaris has a background in Byzantine music and eastern music (specifically the oud, saz, afghani rabab and yayli tambur). He has an extensive career as a composer and performing in Greece and abroad including on television and with multiple noteworthy ensembles. Voulgaris’ academic career includes teaching at some of Greece’s most prestigious music schools including the Municipal Conservatory of Patras, the Epirus Technological Institute and the School of Traditional Instruments. Voulgaris has performed and recorded with artists including Dimitris Mystakidis, Μurat Aydemir amongst others.
